How to Use This Tool
Compare package count forced by weight with package count forced by volume. Estimate packages required, items per package and unused weight and volume capacity from uniform-item shipment assumptions.
The decision this tool supports
A shipment may fit by cubic volume but fail the gross-weight limit once carton tare is included, or the reverse. This page keeps the decision bounded to packages required and the supporting outputs shown beside it. Package Allocation does not import an account, infer a market rate, or silently substitute an industry average.
Inputs and units
The Package Allocation calculation uses Items to ship, Weight per item, Volume per item, Maximum gross package weight, Usable package volume, Package tare weight. Keep all money values in one currency and all time, distance, mass, energy or volume entries in the unit printed beside the field. Mixing Package Allocation scopes can produce a plausible number with the wrong meaning.

Formula and worked check
Items/package is the smaller whole-number capacity from payload weight and volume; packages = ceiling(items ÷ items/package). One hundred 2-lb, 0.15-ft³ items in 50-lb gross, 4-ft³ packages with 2-lb tare fit 24 per package, requiring five packages. The Package Allocation default is an executable known-answer case, not a benchmark or recommendation. Change one input and verify that the direction of packages required still matches the stated relationship.
How to interpret the result
The result is a uniform-item capacity plan; pack actual dimensions and fragility before buying labels. The additional Package Allocation outputs expose the denominator, comparison, capacity or reverse value needed to audit the primary result instead of presenting one unexplained number.

Save the Package Allocation input values and date with any material decision. A later Package Allocation rerun is reproducible only when the same assumptions and units are available.
Limitations and safety boundary
Orientation, nesting, void fill, mixed SKUs, dimensional weight, package size limits, weight distribution and carrier rules are excluded. Package Allocation is an estimate and cannot replace a contract, local code, licensed professional, calibrated measurement, lender statement or platform report where one governs the decision.
