Convert pallet dimensions and total weight into density without guessing a freight class. Calculate freight density in lb/ft³ and kg/m³ plus total cubic volume from package dimensions, weight and piece count.
The decision this tool supports
Freight quotes often need shipment density, but dimensions are recorded in inches while rating discussions use pounds per cubic foot. This page keeps the decision bounded to freight density and the supporting outputs shown beside it. Freight Density does not import an account, infer a market rate, or silently substitute an industry average.
Inputs and units
The Freight Density calculation uses Length per piece, Width per piece, Height per piece, Weight per piece, Number of pieces. Keep all money values in one currency and all time, distance, mass, energy or volume entries in the unit printed beside the field. Mixing Freight Density scopes can produce a plausible number with the wrong meaning.
- Length per piece is entered in inches.
- Width per piece is entered in inches.
- Height per piece is entered in inches.
- Weight per piece is entered in lb.
- Number of pieces is entered in pieces.
Formula and worked check
Cubic feet = length × width × height × pieces ÷ 1,728; density = total pounds ÷ total cubic feet; kg/m³ = lb/ft³ × 16.0184634. One 48 × 40 × 48 inch pallet weighing 1,200 lb occupies 53.33 ft³ and has density 22.50 lb/ft³, or 360.4 kg/m³. The Freight Density default is an executable known-answer case, not a benchmark or recommendation. Change one input and verify that the direction of freight density still matches the stated relationship.
How to interpret the result
Use the density as a shipment measurement only; obtain current classification and rating treatment from the carrier or governing tariff. The additional Freight Density outputs expose the denominator, comparison, capacity or reverse value needed to audit the primary result instead of presenting one unexplained number.

Save the Freight Density input values and date with any material decision. A later Freight Density rerun is reproducible only when the same assumptions and units are available.

Freight Density is an estimate and cannot replace a contract, local code, licensed professional, calibrated measurement, lender statement or platform report where one governs the decision.
