Put in two screen sizes and you get the real width and height of each, how much more screen the larger one actually is, and how far away to sit.
Diagonal is a bad way to compare screens
The number on the box is the diagonal, and the thing you look at is the area. Area scales with the square of the diagonal, so every step up is bigger than it sounds:
- 55" to 65" — 18.2% more diagonal, 39.7% more screen
- 55" to 75" — 36.4% more diagonal, 86.0% more screen
In inches that is 1292.6 in² against 1805.3 and 2403.6. The upgrade people describe as "a bit bigger" is nearly half as much screen again, which is worth knowing before you measure the alcove.
It runs the other way too: a 43" is not much more than half the screen of a 55", despite sounding close.
Aspect ratio changes what a diagonal means
Two screens with the same diagonal and different shapes are not the same size. A 34" ultrawide at 21:9 has 418.6 in² of glass; a 34" 16:9 panel would have 494.0 in² — the ultrawide is 15.3% smaller despite the identical number.
The flatter the shape, the more the diagonal exaggerates. That is why an ultrawide monitor advertised against a conventional one always sounds like a bigger jump than it is, and why old 4:3 sets had far more area than their diagonal suggested.
How far away to sit
There is no single right answer, because it depends on what you are watching and what you like. Two long-standing reference points:
- Roughly a 30° field of view — the SMPTE recommendation for general viewing. For a 65" that is about 8.8 ft.
- Roughly 40° — the more cinematic THX-style figure, about 6.5 ft for the same screen.
Both assume you want the screen to fill a certain amount of your vision. Sitting closer than the 40° figure is not harmful, it just means moving your eyes to follow the action. Sitting further than 30° is the common case, and it is why people who upgrade rarely regret going larger.
Resolution matters much less than the size
Whether you can see the extra pixels depends on how much of your vision each one occupies. Taking one arcminute as the limit of normal acuity, a 65" 4K panel shows its full detail only within about 4.2 ft. Beyond that the pixels blur together and it looks the same as a good 1080p panel, which itself resolves fully out to 8.5 ft.
Most living rooms sit at 8 to 10 ft. So for a given budget, a larger screen almost always makes a bigger difference than a higher pixel count — and contrast, black level and how the panel handles motion make more difference than either.
