How to Use This Tool
Pick what the recipe was written for and what you actually own. The multiplier comes from the ratio of the two areas, because area is what the batter spreads across.
Why area and not diameter
A round pan's area is πr². Double the radius and you get four times the area, not twice. To get exactly twice the area you multiply the diameter by √2 = 1.414. An 8″ round holds 50.3 in²; the pan that holds twice that is 11.3″, and a 16″ would hold four times as much.

Three results that catch people out
A 9×13 is 2.33 times an 8″ round, not 2. Doubling an 8″ recipe to fill a 9×13 leaves the batter about 14% shallower than the recipe intended, which changes the texture and the timing.
An 8″ square holds more than a 9″ round. 64.0 in² against 63.6 — close enough to swap freely, which is useful to know. But an 8″ square against an 8″ round is a 27% difference, because the corners are worth a lot.
Two 8″ rounds are not a 9×13. Together they are 100.5 in² against 117 — only 86% of it. That very common substitution leaves you noticeably short.
What does not scale
Baking time. It depends on how deep the batter sits and how fast heat reaches the middle, and neither is proportional to the ingredient multiplier. Two rules that do hold:
- Same batter, shallower layer → bakes faster, and can dry out.
- Same batter, deeper layer → bakes slower, and the outside can set before the middle does.
The reliable method is to keep the temperature the same, start checking well before the original time if the layer is shallower, and add time in small increments if it is deeper. A skewer or an instant-read thermometer beats the clock. This tool tells you which direction to expect and deliberately does not print a scaled time, because that number cannot be derived from the geometry.
Other things that do not scale cleanly
Leavening and salt scale with the batter, so the multiplier is fine for them. Strong spices and chilli are usually scaled back slightly when multiplying up, and eggs come in whole units — a 2.33× multiplier on three eggs is seven, which is why the tool shows the raw figure and leaves the rounding to you. Pan depth also matters: a shallow tin cannot hold a 2.33× batch however large its footprint, so check that the sides are tall enough before committing.
