How to Use This Tool
Round a wall layout to whole blocks and show the backfill volume separately. Estimate retaining-wall blocks, cap units, courses and backfill volume from wall dimensions, block face size and waste.
The decision this tool supports
Area-only estimates miss whole-block rounding by course and often mix wall-face units with the separate volume behind the wall. This page keeps the decision bounded to wall blocks including waste and the supporting outputs shown beside it. Retaining Wall does not import an account, infer a market rate, or silently substitute an industry average.
Inputs and units
The Retaining Wall calculation uses Wall length, Wall height, Block face length, Block face height, Waste allowance, Backfill depth. Keep all money values in one currency and all time, distance, mass, energy or volume entries in the unit printed beside the field. Mixing Retaining Wall scopes can produce a plausible number with the wrong meaning.

- Waste allowance is entered in %.
- Backfill depth is entered in feet.
Formula and worked check
Blocks per course and courses are separately rounded up; block and cap totals then apply waste. Backfill yd³ = length × height × depth ÷ 27. A 30-by-4-foot wall using 16-by-8-inch faces, 10% waste and one foot of backfill gives 152 blocks, 26 caps, six courses and 4.44 yd³ backfill. The Retaining Wall default is an executable known-answer case, not a benchmark or recommendation. Change one input and verify that the direction of wall blocks including waste still matches the stated relationship.
How to interpret the result
Use the totals for an early material check, then replace nominal block dimensions with the exact manufacturer's coverage and engineered drainage detail. The additional Retaining Wall outputs expose the denominator, comparison, capacity or reverse value needed to audit the primary result instead of presenting one unexplained number.
