How to Use This Tool
Enter the room and the tile, then pick the layout. The waste factor changes with the pattern, which is the part most calculators leave as a fixed 10 per cent.
Waste is cuts, and cuts are geometry
In a straight or offset layout, tiles are only cut where a row meets a wall. The off-cut from one end of a row can often start the next row, so waste stays around 10 per cent.
Rotate the grid 45 degrees and every tile along every wall is cut at an angle, producing two triangles where only one is usable. Herringbone has the same problem in both directions. Both land nearer 15 per cent. Add a border or an inset panel and there is a second set of cut edges around the feature, worth about another 5 per cent.

You buy boxes, and boxes round hard
Tile is sold by the box, so the real answer is always a whole number of boxes. In the example, 8.25 boxes becomes 9. That rounding is worth more than the difference between a 10 and a 15 per cent waste factor at small room sizes, which is why both are shown.
The dye lot argument for one extra box
Ceramic and porcelain tile is fired in batches, and the batch number is printed on the box. Two boxes from different lots can differ enough in shade to be visible across a floor. More to the point, patterns get discontinued: crack one tile in two years and a matching replacement may simply not exist.
One spare box, kept dry and flat, is cheap insurance against replacing a whole floor. It is a default here rather than an afterthought.
Grout joints do not save you tiles
A wider grout joint means slightly fewer tiles across a run, but the effect is small and it never works in your favour on the cut pieces. Sizing from the nominal tile face, as this does, is the conservative approach and matches how boxes are labelled.
What is not included
Thinset mortar, grout, backer board, underlayment and trim are separate calculations with their own coverage rates, mostly driven by trowel notch size and joint width rather than area.
