How to Use This Tool
Use the EPA gasoline-energy equivalent while keeping charging-boundary differences visible. Convert MPGe and kWh per 100 miles in either direction, with energy per mile and miles per kWh shown for checking.
The decision this tool supports
MPGe looks like gasoline MPG but is an energy-equivalence label; comparing it with a vehicle dashboard requires conversion to an electricity unit. This page keeps the decision bounded to energy consumption and the supporting outputs shown beside it. MPGe to kWh/100 mi does not import an account, infer a market rate, or silently substitute an industry average.
Inputs and units
The MPGe to kWh/100 mi calculation uses MPGe input (set other field to 0), kWh/100 miles input (set other field to 0). Keep all money values in one currency and all time, distance, mass, energy or volume entries in the unit printed beside the field. Mixing MPGe to kWh/100 mi scopes can produce a plausible number with the wrong meaning.
- MPGe input (set other field to 0) is entered in MPGe.
- kWh/100 miles input (set other field to 0) is entered in kWh/100 mi.
Formula and worked check
EPA's energy equivalent is 33.7 kWh per gallon equivalent: kWh/100 mi = 3,370 ÷ MPGe, and MPGe = 3,370 ÷ kWh/100 mi. 100 MPGe converts to 33.70 kWh/100 miles, 0.337 kWh/mile and 2.97 miles/kWh; entering 33.7 in the reverse field returns 100 MPGe. The MPGe to kWh/100 mi default is an executable known-answer case, not a benchmark or recommendation. Change one input and verify that the direction of energy consumption still matches the stated relationship.
How to interpret the result
Enter exactly one direction. EPA label MPGe includes specified charging losses, so do not automatically equate it with battery-only dashboard consumption. The additional MPGe to kWh/100 mi outputs expose the denominator, comparison, capacity or reverse value needed to audit the primary result instead of presenting one unexplained number.
Assumptions
- Exactly one input field is positive and the other is zero.
- The EPA 33.7 kWh gasoline-gallon-equivalent definition is intended.
- Distance is 100 statute miles.
Save the MPGe to kWh/100 mi input values and date with any material decision. A later MPGe to kWh/100 mi rerun is reproducible only when the same assumptions and units are available.
Limitations and safety boundary
The conversion is exact for the 33.7 kWh label definition but does not reconcile test cycles, charging loss boundaries, temperature or real-world driving. MPGe to kWh/100 mi is an estimate and cannot replace a contract, local code, licensed professional, calibrated measurement, lender statement or platform report where one governs the decision.
