Idle time is often tracked in hours while fuel budgets are tracked in currency, leaving the avoidable operating cost invisible. This page keeps the decision bounded to monthly idle fuel cost and the supporting outputs shown beside it. Idle Fuel Cost does not import an account, infer a market rate, or silently substitute an industry average.
Inputs and units
The Idle Fuel Cost calculation uses Idle time per operating day, Idle fuel rate, Fuel price, Operating days per month. Keep all money values in one currency and all time, distance, mass, energy or volume entries in the unit printed beside the field. Formula and worked check
Idle fuel = idle hours × fuel rate; cost multiplies fuel by the entered price and operating-day count. 2.5 idle hours at 0.7 gal/hour and $3.50/gal across 20 days uses 35 gallons and costs $122.50 per month. The Idle Fuel Cost default is an executable known-answer case, not a benchmark or recommendation. Change one input and verify that the direction of monthly idle fuel cost still matches the stated relationship.
How to interpret the result
Use an observed vehicle-specific idle rate when possible and compare by duty cycle; anti-idling action must preserve safety, temperature and operational requirements. The additional Idle Fuel Cost outputs expose the denominator, comparison, capacity or reverse value needed to audit the primary result instead of presenting one unexplained number.
