How to Use This Tool

Fuel economy is one of the few everyday numbers where two countries use the same word, the same abbreviation, and different units. An American car rated at 30 MPG would be advertised as 36 MPG in Britain, because the imperial gallon is 4.546 litres against the US gallon's 3.785. Same car, same fuel, 20% difference in the headline number.

This converter keeps the two apart and always shows both, so you can compare a US road test against a UK one without quietly concluding that the British version is more efficient.

The other trap: the scale runs backwards

MPG and km/L are efficiency measures — more is better. L/100 km is a consumption measure — less is better. Converting between them means taking a reciprocal, not multiplying, which is why the relationship is a curve rather than a straight line.

That curve has a consequence people consistently get wrong. Going from 15 to 20 MPG saves far more fuel than going from 40 to 50 MPG, even though the second improvement looks bigger.

Replacing the thirstiest vehicle you own saves more fuel than making an already-efficient one better. The MPG number hides this; L/100 km does not.

This is the reason Europe switched to L/100 km and why fleet managers think in it. Consumption per distance is linear in fuel, so the savings are visible directly. If you are choosing between two upgrades, compare the L/100 km figures, not the MPG ones.

Using the cost panel

Enter your fuel price and a distance, and the panel shows what that trip costs and what a year of similar driving would cost. The price unit is separate from the consumption unit on purpose — plenty of people know their consumption in MPG and their fuel price per litre, and doing that conversion in your head is where the arithmetic usually goes wrong.

Honest limits

Official figures are laboratory results. Real consumption depends on speed, temperature, tyre pressure, load, terrain and how you drive, and typically comes in 10–25% worse than the sticker. Use your own measured figure if you have one: fill the tank, drive, refill, and divide. That number is worth more than any manufacturer's.

Why does Europe use L/100km instead of MPG?
Because it is linear in the thing that costs money. Fuel used per 100 km can be added, averaged and compared directly, so a saving of 1 L/100 km means the same amount of fuel whether you started at 5 or 15. MPG is a reciprocal scale, so a gain of 5 MPG means something completely different at the two ends of the range.
Which improvement saves more fuel, 15 to 20 MPG or 40 to 50?
The first, by a wide margin. Going from 15 to 20 US MPG cuts consumption from 15.7 to 11.8 L/100 km, saving 3.9 litres every 100 km. Going from 40 to 50 saves only 1.2 litres per 100 km despite being twice the MPG gain. If you own several vehicles, replacing the thirstiest one is almost always the biggest win.
What is km/L and who uses it?
Kilometres travelled per litre of fuel. It is used in Japan, India, and much of Latin America and South East Asia. Like MPG it is an efficiency measure where higher is better, and it converts to US MPG by multiplying by roughly 2.352.
Why is my real fuel economy worse than the official figure?
Official figures come from a standardised laboratory cycle that cannot reproduce real conditions. Cold starts, short trips, high motorway speeds, roof boxes, air conditioning, low tyre pressure and hilly routes all cost fuel, and a typical real-world shortfall is 10 to 25%. Measuring your own by filling, driving and refilling gives a number that actually applies to you.
Does the fuel type change the conversion?
No. The conversion between MPG, L/100 km and km/L is purely a unit conversion and holds for petrol, diesel or anything else. What differs is the energy content per litre — diesel carries roughly 10% more energy per litre than petrol, which is part of why diesel cars post better consumption figures for the same work.
