The decision this tool supports
A checksum job over millions of files can create a surprisingly large manifest when path text is longer than the digest itself. This page keeps the decision bounded to manifest size and the supporting outputs shown beside it. Hash Manifest Size does not import an account, infer a market rate, or silently substitute an industry average.
Inputs and units
The Hash Manifest Size calculation uses Files in manifest, Hash characters per line, Average path characters, Separator characters, Line ending bytes. Keep all money values in one currency and all time, distance, mass, energy or volume entries in the unit printed beside the field. Mixing Hash Manifest Size scopes can produce a plausible number with the wrong meaning.

Formula and worked check
Bytes per ASCII record = hash characters + separator + path characters + line-ending bytes; total bytes multiply by file count. One million SHA-256-style 64-character hashes with 48-character paths, two separators and LF use 115,000,000 bytes or 115 MB. The Hash Manifest Size default is an executable known-answer case, not a benchmark or recommendation. Change one input and verify that the direction of manifest size still matches the stated relationship.
How to interpret the result
Use decimal MB for transfer planning and bytes per record to compare algorithms or path-normalization choices. The additional Hash Manifest Size outputs expose the denominator, comparison, capacity or reverse value needed to audit the primary result instead of presenting one unexplained number.
