How to Use This Tool
Enter the outside dimensions of the box, the actual weight, and the divisor your carrier uses. The divisor is on your rate card; 139 is the usual figure for US domestic services.
You are billed on whichever weight is larger
Dimensional weight is the volume of the box divided by a constant. If it exceeds the actual weight, that is what you pay on. The reasoning is that a carrier sells space in a vehicle, and a large light parcel consumes space it cannot sell to anyone else.
The consequence for the shipper is blunt: the box is a cost decision, often a bigger one than what goes in it.

Volume goes as the cube, which is why small changes are large
Reducing every dimension by 11 per cent — 18 inches to 16 — cuts the volume by 30 per cent, because the reduction applies three times over. That is the whole reason box selection beats rate negotiation for most small shippers: nobody is going to give you a 30 per cent discount, but a smaller box will.
The same effect works against you. Rounding a box up from 14 to 18 inches "just in case" more than doubles the dimensional weight.
A lower divisor costs more
Because the divisor is underneath, a smaller one produces a larger billable weight. Carriers moved from 194 to 166 to 139 over the years, and each step raised effective prices without changing a single published rate. If you have a commercial account the divisor is one of the negotiable terms, and it is worth more than a headline discount on a route you rarely use.
Measure the outside, and round the way the carrier does
Dimensions are the outside of the packed box including any bulge, not the flat carton size. Most carriers round each dimension up to the next whole inch or centimetre before multiplying, and round the final weight up as well, so a box measured at 17.2 inches is charged as 18.
What actually reduces the bill
Right-sized boxes, poly mailers for anything soft, vacuum or compression packing for textiles, and removing void fill that only exists because the box was too big in the first place. All of those change the geometry, which is the only term in the formula you control.
