HOUSE STYLE FIELD GUIDE
British spelling has more than one house style
Cambridge-style British English usually writes organise; Oxford British English accepts organize. The -ize ending is not exclusively American. Choose the target style your publisher, school, or organisation follows.
Words that should never become “-ize”
Advertise, advise, arise, chastise, comprise, compromise, despise, devise, disguise, exercise, improvise, merchandise, promise, revise, supervise, surprise, and related forms keep -ise in every variety. The converter protects them from blanket suffix replacement.
Where context still matters
- In British English, licence is a noun and license is a verb.
- Practice is the British noun; practise is the verb.
- Programme can mean a broadcast or schedule; program is used for software.
The tool marks these terms for a person to review. It uses a curated word list rather than a complete dictionary, so specialist vocabulary and proper names may remain unchanged.
